Life under the Maroela Tree

Life under the Maroela Tree

The youngster shoving her nose into the camera is this year’s foal of “Naomi” ….for those who do not know who “Naomi Campbell the Zebra” is….

It is actually good to also compare the two photos to see the effect that the drought is having.

This foal is just like her mother….full of tricks….after I took the photos she actually shoved her nose right into the lens and it took me some time to clean it from the muddy zebra mucus LOL

Floppy

Floppy

We have known this Kudu calf, with his floppy ear, since he was a baby. He is part of a herd consisting out of 4 cows, 3 calves and 1 young bull. In normal times they only visit our house ever now and then…the drought has them now stopping by at least twice a day.

Breakfast for two

Breakfast for two

Vervet Monkeys helping themselves to the bird food.
We normally chase them away as soon as we spot them….they can become quite a nuisance when they get too tame. With the drought we now give them a bit of leniency and allow them a few minutes to raid the birdfeeder before we chase them.

There is always something to smile about

There is always something to smile about

Apart from serious time constrains, I have not been taking much photos lately because I’m very depressed and sad about the drought we have in Marloth Park (where our bush house is situated). This is the driest I have seen this area and the lack of vegetation is taking its toll on the animals. I know in my mind that this is nature and these are wild animals that have to live by the rules of nature….but it also breaks my hart …..it is not easy to watch all the suffering as a spectator….especially considering that I have known some of these animals since they were born. Some animals are displaying worse signs of malnutrition than other….the zebra and warthogs actually still look good but it might be because most of their weight lies in muscles. The impala and kudus (especially the cows with calf) are just skin and bone…..this weekend we saw a kudu cow that I’m sure are not going to make it.
We try and help a bit by throwing out wildlife pellets and whatever vegetables we can get at a cheap price….this is however just a drop in the ocean.

I was taking photos of the bush to try and capture this dire situation when this warthog gave me a pose that made me smile again…. She probably thought my camera was something to eat and was sniffing the air….They can be such comics and have often had us laughing out loud for all their antics.
