Ely Cathedral LanternZoomed out to show the structure and decoration This is all wood construction.
Uploaded on Aug 27, 2008 Star TurnThe inside of the tower of Ely Cathedral. This part (the Lantern) dates from the 13th century. 23m wide, 43m high and the only wooden Gothic dome in existence. Fortunately Henry 8th and Cromwell didn't manage to smash it up, but they certainly had a good go at lower structures in the Cathedral. Oliver Cromwell only lived a few hundred yards away. Several major restorations have made this a very fine building again, although the location is a bit remote for overseas visitors.
